Why is it that the bus one has just missed is usually on time but thenext one is usually late?I was just pondering this as I got into the (late) bus this morning andpicked up the Metro. Interestingly, it had an article on research by twomathematicians on a related problem: if a bus is late, is it better tostay put and wait or is it better to give up and start walking?Their conclusion is that it is usually better to stay put and keepwaiting for the eventual arrival of the bus. I am sure the full article(New Scientist) talks about their assumptions – time taken to walk, frequency of buses, etc. They concluded that the best solution is tonever wait – to just decided to walk from the start: one may be late butone will be less frustrated. Cycling is of course even better if possible.
