I’ve just watched the Helvetica documentary – wow. I thought I wasstrange for having spent ages playing with fonts; good to see others asinterested, and of course to listen to the professionalsMost interesting was the diatribe in the Extras by Eric Spiekermann onthe relationship between Arial and Helvetica (namely MSoft’s wish toavoid paying royalties to Linotype, which is also the issue linking theFrutiger font and (Vista’s) Segue). Good food for thought in musings bydesigners on how personalisation in current society — whether ofwebpages, etc but also more generally in how we portray ourselves–isbeing controlled by big business, and in a way Helvetica embodies manyof these principles of mass culture. Some of the interviews in theExtras were more interesting than the bits that made it to the final cut.I couldn’t help but notice that most (all?) designers had Apple laptopson their desks.
