While it’s been great having a sabbatical year, I am quite lookingforward to getting back to teaching and hanging out with undergraduatestudents – they give out a great vibe and make sure we keep ourknowledge of CS up to date.I am however going to be teaching Operating Systems which I have nevertaught before. It’s a very important module, of course, and I hope I dojustice to it. This follows the theme I always try to keep to inCompiler Design (which I will again teach next year) – that bigfundamental software systems depend on *both* good underlying theory anda practical nous for their success, not to mention joy in hacking. I canhelp point to theory, but it is upto the students to bring in theirexperience and their critical minds, to really master the subject. And of course I will be supervising student projects. I am at a loss tothinking of exciting ones right now, but am open to suggestions. Thereis the real good possibility of extending projects which I havesupervised in the past, mu-cell (last year’s 4th year project onsimulation of bacterial populations) being main one I want to encouragestudents to take up. I should have something up on the web in a coupleof weeks.
